Yes, I am obsessed with black – the shades and the shadows. There are so many blacks! The fibre, weave and nap add up to endless variations. And when it is quilted, well, the shadows created are magical.
It is probably no surprise that my favourite artist is Ralph Hotere.
I remember seeing an exhibition of his at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery many years ago and being mesmerised by the black on black works.
I will freely admit that one of my first black works ‘Let us now consider solitude’, is a Hotere knock-off (see one of the originals) – but a great piece to be inspired by, on my way to finding my own voice.
